 Thought for the Week

1 Samuel 16:7 states, “But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.”

This passage from the Bible describes God’s conversation with the prophet Samuel concerning who is to be King over Israel.  He is explaining to Samuel that David, who at the time is a young shepherd boy, is to replace Saul as King.  From this text, we can clearly see that God is most concerned about man’s inward appearance.  King Saul had been disobedient to God’s commands and has shown disrespect and arrogance by making excuses for his actions.  Saul may have looked the part of King but God knew what was in his heart.  He knew the real King Saul.

Human nature is no different today.  Man’s outward appearance is worshipped today more than we realize and is a trap that many fall prey.  On the other hand, what God really sees and respects is inner beauty.  God wants to see in us a spirit of genuine honesty, integrity, humility, charity, modesty, obedience, etc.  These are the qualities in people that God notices.  We should strive to be more like God and notice these qualities in others and give them reverence no matter their intellect, social status, or outward appearance.

In 1 Peter 3:4, we read, “But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.”
